RIVER EAMONT
Canoeing & Kayaking
Dalemain is acting on behalf of the Eamont Owners Association whose members own the riparian rights to the river. This enables us to protect the river for everyone to enjoy. There is no free right of navigation but permission for access or travel along the river can easily be obtained.
The river is a refuge for white clawed crayfish and often you will see salmon, eels, otters and a wide variety of birds. To protect the wildlife, we don’t let anyone onto the river in November, when salmon are spawning. You are not allowed to drag your craft at any time of the year either and we may not be able to grant access if the river is too low because you might damage the shale beds and salmon egg beds. Sometimes, you may not be able to go down the river if there are other activities going on that particular day.
Canoeists are requested to take care when encountering fishermen on the river. Wait for the fisherman to acknowledge their presence and then indicate which side of the river it is safe to pass. Care should always be taken as the hooks being used can be very dangerous (someone once got hooked).
The river flows from Ullswater to Eamont Bridge. It can be accessed from Ullswater, the car park at Pooley Bridge or Pooley Mill (but no parking is available here).
There may be a small charge which goes towards protecting the river for the future which depends on group size and whether you are running a commercial activity.
Those without permission may make themselves liable to legal action. The water bailiffs and other members of the group monitor the river and report any unauthorised access.
If you wish to exit the River at Brougham Castle, please seek permission from Mr J S Slack at Brougham Castle Farm, tel. +44 (0) 17688 62123.
