THE BUNGALOW

What is it?

The Bungalow is a unique, self-catering property in the heart of the Lake District. It was constructed in 1910 as a shooting lodge for Hugh Lowther, Earl of Lonsdale to host a visit from the German Kaiser who had previously stayed at Lowther Castle. Old fashioned baths and wooden walls are clothed in a corrugated iron exterior. The open veranda gives panoramic views of Martindale with it’s distinctive red roof visible from afar. The house has been carefully maintained to protect this heritage and the atmosphere is unique.

Deep in the Lake District Fells, it is ideal to use as a base for walking holidays and the wildlife is extraordinary. Birds, sheep and the oldest native herd of Red Deer in the UK graze across this private valley. As part of the Lake District World Heritage Site, Martindale has a rich farming culture with beautiful drystone walls and the sheep hefted to the fell. Should you wish to leave the valley, there are places to visit or to eat out within easy reach including a number of pubs and restaurants in Pooley Bridge and of course Dalemain and other tourist attractions within a half hour drive.

What to expect when you get here

The Bungalow sleeps 10 with 3 double beds and 4 single beds. It offers a very private, self-catering accommodation. It is ideal for a large or extended family or perhaps two families. This is not for commercial use. For an idea of the lay out and space click to see a floor Plan to Scale.

This would be an ideal get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life but to do this you should be aware that there is no internet, mobile signal or a landline. There is no electricity and so no TV. Lighting, heating and cooking is done by gas. Water supply is from a stream and so guests must bring their own bottled drinking water. It is furnished in a comfortable but simple style in keeping with the property. The house is deep in the Lake District and visitors should understand the more basic nature of the accommodation before they book. The Bungalow is in an isolated position at the end of a rough farm track. The final 40m climb up the hill is only accessible by 4×4 or walking and we advise visitors to bring a vehicle that is suitable.
